Ushani Hewage, a senior textile designer from Sri Lanka, was inspired by her father's work ethic. Determined to make a difference, she researched and developed a new fabric technology at the University of Moratuwa.
She launched Ushani Designs to commercialize the technology (while working full-time at Hayley's), and build a business making traditional handloom designs with modern, contemporary fabrics. Ushanin's business model is based on employing rural women weavers and paying them high living wages, ending the cycle of subsistence and poverty. Her efforts have been recognized by the Sri Lankan government and the World Intellectual Property Organization. |
